IoT Questions & Answers

IoT devices are basically smart devices which have support for internet connectivity and are able to interact with the other devices over the internet and grant remote access to a user for managing the device as per their need.

There are several top devices in the market. Smart Mobiles, smart refrigerators, smart watches, smart fire alarm, smart door lock, smart bicycle, medical sensors, fitness trackers, smart security system etc., are few examples of IoT products.

IoT device market is increasing drastically, hence it is assumed to have more than 20 billion IoT products in the market up and in running state by the year 2021.

The technologies used in these devices are low energy wireless and Bluetooth, NFC, LTE, ZigBee, wireless protocols etc.

IoT product/devices are basically physical devices integrated with software and can connect with each other over the internet to exchange information, they help the user for more simple and direct integration of the physical world.

Building Automation Questions & Answers

Building automation is the use of electronic automation and control to monitor and manage various devices in a building, such as HVAC, lighting, alarms, and security access and cameras. Converging these systems into a single IT-managed network infrastructure creates a smart building.

Building automation systems work by connecting all the building's electrical, air conditioning, lighting, water, elevator and other equipments in one network. This is then controlled from one central location using an automated system that can rely on a few sensors and what it has learned from its environment to efficiently manage those systems.

The purpose of building automation or a building management system (BMS) is to improve occupant comfort, the efficiency of building equipments, and to reduce energy consumption and operating costs. It also helps in managing the preventive maintenance of various equipments.

The most significant benefit of building automation is energy conservation without compromising on occupant's comfort. This is achieved by studying the usage pattern of occupants and weather condition of the location. Building automation will achieve that through device-to-device communication.

EV Charging Questions and Answers

A charging station, also known as a charge point or electric vehicle supply equipment, is a piece of equipment that supplies electrical power for charging plug-in electric vehicles. There are two main types: AC charging stations and DC fast chargers.

There three main types of EV Chargers – rapid, fast, and slow.

Rapid Chargers (Level 3)

As the name suggests, these are the fastest EV chargers, also known as DC fast chargers that have CCS2 or CHAdeMO connectors. The main reason behind their speed is these are DC plugs. DC chargers can transmit energy extremely rapidly and can charge your car in as less as 45-60 minutes.

Fast Chargers (Level 2)

These are commonly available chargers, which can be installed in commercial and residential building parking areas. These chargers are capable of fully charging an EV in 2-3 hours. These chargers come with remote monitoring App which can display the charging level of your EV.

Slow chargers (Level 1)

These are the EV chargers that most EV owners are currently using. These can be simply set up at in your residential premises using the existing power supply. These chargers take around 8 hours to fully charge your car’s battery. The best way to use them is to put your car on a charge overnight.

  • When using a public charging station, make sure all the components are in good working order and there are no signs of misuse or disrepair to ensure charging station safety.
  • Never use an EV charger if it is damaged or off its base.
  • Always follow the EV charging safety guidelines and car safety guidelines laid down by the manufacturer when charging your vehicle.
  • While installing home charging equipment, make sure to use only certified devices for maximum electric vehicle safety.
  • If you’re charging your EV at home, plug the charger directly into an accurate outlet instead of using a multiplug adapter or extension cord.
  • Properly maintain the charging station components as per the manufacturer’s guidelines to avoid a potential shock hazard and ensure electric car crash safety.
  • Avoid charging the EV battery immediately after using the vehicle. It is best to let the batteries cool down before you charge them to ensure electric vehicle safety.

Make sure that as per vehicle safety guidelines, you are using a DC charging station as vehicle batteries are always charged by DC power. The DC charging station will convert AC into DC to charge the EV.

Moreover, when it comes to EV safety, vehicle safety guidelines suggest that ground fault protection is essential at both the DC output side and the AC grid side. These ground-fault relays for DC voltage detect electrical issues and minimize shock hazards to EV drivers for maximum safety.

Home charging is the most widely used charging infrastructure by EV owners, which uses a 230V charger that delivers up to 2.5kW of output power.

Tips to maximise electrical vehicle safety

Here’s how you can ensure the overall safety and long life of your electric vehicle-

Don’t keep the vehicle battery completely full or empty

Whenever possible, try to maintain the vehicle battery’s charging status between 20% to 80%. Charging the battery repeatedly and till 100% might cause it to degrade more quickly.

Check the vehicle batteries regularly

As opposed to fuel cars, the battery level of an EV might drain even if the vehicle is parked and has not been used for a long time. So, make sure to keep a track of when you charged it last and the overall performance of the battery to ensure electric vehicle safety.

Use your vehicle for regular, short trips

Don’t keep the vehicle ideal for too long. Similar to fuel cars, the overall health of the vehicle might get affected if it is not used for a drive now and then.

Avoid fast charging

If you drive the vehicle a lot and need to charge it frequently, then fast charging is undoubtedly a great convenience. However, it transfers too much current into the batteries in a short time, which can weaken the health of your batteries. You might not notice the difference, but on average, 8 years of slow charging will give you 10% more battery life than 8 years of fast charging.
